Sketching Animals
This program focuses on the challenges of capturing the essence of animal shape and motion from live subjects. We’ll start with a bit of classroom instruction, slow-motion DVD’s, and a warm-up as we get up close and personal with one or two Education animals, then we’ll move outdoors to sketch the zoo’s residents.
Fur, Feathers, and Scales
Adding Texture to Animal Drawings and Paintings – Not all fur, feathers, or scales are alike. Once you are comfortable drawing basic animal forms, detailing their outside coverings is the next step in accurate and beautiful animal art. We’ll study the basic structures and varieties of each, observe growth patterns, and look at ways to reproduce their appearance accurately in our artwork. Primary emphasis will be on pencil technique, but we will discuss color techniques as well.
Next Steps: Going from Sketches to Finished Work
Sketching is fun, but sometimes you want to take your sketch to the next level and produce a piece ready for framing. You have a sketchbook full of ideas and possibilities; but what are the next steps? It’s a real challenge to select the ideal pose or scenes, maybe combine several sketches, and add convincing elements to fill out your finished piece, all while keeping the spontaneity of your sketch. We’ll explore the steps, tips and tricks, and pitfalls of The Next Step.
Watercolor Landscapes
An Intro to Field Sketching with Watercolors – If you ever wanted to capture the essence of our beautiful fall scenery using the fun and fluid medium of water, this workshop is for you! We will cover general principles of sketching, discuss basic sketching and watercolor supplies, how to assemble a field sketching pack, selection of subjects, and basic watercolor techniques. We will start indoors in the morning to cover basics and then move outside for real field experience.
