SPECIES SURVIVAL PLANS
Species Survival Plans (SSPs) are programs coordinated by the American Zoo and Aquarium Association (AZA) which allow zoos to work together to save vulnerable species. SSPs facilitate cooperative animal management - all the individuals of a single species in each AZA zoo are managed as a single population. They also coordinate information sharing between zoos and the conservation education and field conservation efforts of zoos.
In addition to SSP species, other vulnerable animals are managed in captivity for conservation in a less intensive manner. These species are designated as conservation priority species by the appropriate AZA Taxon Advisory Groups.
